The Role of Tourism Related Migrations on Sociocultural Change: The Case of Didyma

Abstract: Didyma is an area which has been home to immigrants for 100 years and so experienced changes in many aspects. Immigration towards a region, alone, has the power to cause change. The development of tourism in Didyma has increased the power of migration to cause change and has turned migration into a self-acting social process. Starting from 1924, when first immigrants arrived at Didyma, if we call every movement of migration of a group of individuals with common characteristics a "stratum of migration," it will… Show more

“…Permanent migrations, as means of achieving an expected future personal or family optimisation of well-being and tourism are interrelated (Dwyer et al 2014;Salazar 2020) but in a non-linear manner (Haas 2010). A number of topics attracted the attention of researchers such as tourism and labor migration, tourism and entrepreneur migration, tourism and return migration, tourism and retirement migration, as well as topics related to the context of social and economic circles including the impact of migration on tourism demand (Williams and Hall 2002;Toker and Kozak 2020). From the production perspective, permanent migrations are correlated with labour migrations that are the result of the demand for manpower generated by the tourist activity that cannot be supplied locally (Williams and Hall 2000), including demand generated by the multiplicative effects on other activities, such as construction, transport, industry and agriculture, commerce and so on.…”

“…The changes created by Russian women immigrants whose numbers and visibility are increasing, and who are settled in Antalya to lead a better social life, particularly in the family structure were examined. A study conducted by Toker and Kozak (2020) examined social changes related to 100 years of migration history of Didim. Studies on migration conceptualized as lifestyle migration in recent years and carried out the desire for a better life are also increased considerably (Ertuğrul, 2016;Görer, 2018;Kiliç & Buzlukçu, 2021;Özgürel & Avcikurt, 2018;Südaş & Mutluer, 2010).…”

“…Sınırları içerisinde yaşanan kültürel çeşitlilik, Didim'i adeta "sosyolojik bir laboratuvara" dönüştürmüştür. Didim, 100 yıldır aldığı göçlerle farklı dil, din, etnik köken, yaşayış, anlayış, kısacası; çok sayıda farklı kültürel arka plana sahip insanların bir arada ve birbirine uyumlanma süreci yaşadığı bir bölgedir(Toker & Kozak, 2020). Bu çerçeveden bakıldığında, araştırmanın sonuçları yerel halkın kent kimliği inşasındaki önemini gözler önüne sermiştir.…”
