The role of virtual prototyping and simulation in the fashion sector

Abstract: Virtual prototyping practice and technologies are developing fast and moving from the traditional industrial sectors that have pushed their development (automotive, aeronautical) to new sectors, like the fashion sector, that is far from them, but anyway economically important. The concept of Virtual Prototyping has been built upon a bottom up approach. Tools oriented to different phases of the product development process (CAD, CAM, CAE, etc.) have been developed separately, without any intersection or anythin… Show more

“…Virtual models allow for coupling design, testing, and manufacture (Sghaier & Soriano 2008). It also enables rapid international communication of design details (Cugini, Bordegoni & Mana 2008). Virtual prototypes allow for testing at a more rapid pace and reduced cost compared to physical prototypes (Christie et al 2012).…”

“…Although drape simulation technique was first used for film and game industries, one the most important application fields would still be the solution for online fashion business or simulation kiosks for offline fashion retailers (Cordier et al, 2003;Cugini et al, 2008).…”

“…There have been many studies on drape simulation technique itself and it is time to find suitable application fields for it (McCartney et al, 2000;Volino et al, 2005;Zhong and Xu, 2009). Although drape simulation technique was first used for film and game industries, one the most important application fields would still be the solution for online fashion business or simulation kiosks for offline fashion retailers (Cordier et al, 2003;Cugini et al, 2008).…”

“…Recently, garment drape simulation has been greatly advanced thanks to the achievements in computer technology and software algorithm (Gong et al , 2001; Rodel et al , 2001; Cordier et al , 2003; Magnenat‐Thalmann and Volino, 2005; Volino and Magnenat‐Thalmann, 2005; Cugini et al , 2008; Jiang et al , 2008). It has become affordable on a personal computer system which took a considerable time even on a large computer a few years ago (Oh et al , 2006).…”
