The role of vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms in the pathogenesis of Behçet's disease: A case‐control study in Turkish population

Abstract: Background: Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory disorder characterized by oral aphthous lesions, uveitis, and genital ulcerations. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) has a crucial role in the pathogenesis of this disease because it mediates the functions of vitamin D in the immune system. Alterations of VDR expression related to polymorphic alleles of the VDR gene may play a pathogenic role in BD and BD's clinical presentations. Methods: 150 BD patients and 150 healthy controls were included and genotyping was c… Show more

“…In addition, Dal et al 18 examined the same gene in patients with BD in Turkish population. They found that arthritis was more frequent due to the vitamin D receptor gene rs2228570 C alleles.…”

“…There have been a relatively large number of investigations evaluating the role of vitamin D in BD susceptibility and pathogenesis. Dal et al 68 evaluated the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms in the pathogenesis of BD in our population. Since they found significant differences in some genotypes between cases with BD and controls, they concluded that these gene polymorphisms may have a possible effect on BD pathogenesis.…”

“…Karray et al found that the VDR gene (rs1544410 and rs2228570) polymorphism were associated with BD in Tunisian patients [141]. In a study with a Turkish cohort, the VDR gene rs1544410 A allele and rs2228570 C allele were reported to be a risk factor for BD susceptibility [142]. In a meta-analysis, the role of the four common VDR polymorphisms has been investigated and it was suggested that rs731236 polymorphism might be a risk factor for BD [143].…”
