Background: Pain is one of the commonest symptoms in patients of all ages presenting to ambulance services. Children in pain make up a relatively small proportion of the number of those attended by prehospital care and pain management is needed in only 40% of cases. This might go some way to explain why the management of paediatric pain is perceived to be poor. Aim: The primary aim of this study was to explore the experiences of UK paramedics in treating children in pain. Methods: A phenomenological study was undertaken using a purposeful sample of UK paramedics (n=12) to explore their experiences and decision-making during the treatment of children in pain. Results: Five themes became apparent through analysis—preparation and education; adaptation and change of approach; organisational and legal factors; support and guidance; familial and carer impact—with some crossover between themes noted. Conclusion: Clinicians are aware of multimodal techniques for managing pain in children but are often less confident in the use of pharmacological than non-pharmacological management methods. Advances in the use of technology in practice have enabled clinicians to use alternative measures to manage children in pain. However, while using these methods, practitioners lack confidence that they are meeting social expectations of their roles.

This article is a review of literature conducted in as systematic manner using the PRISMA statement as a basis for its methodology to answer the following question: How can EtCO2 measuring assist with CPR attempts in SAR Helicopter paramedic practice?’ Results revealed that CO2 coming out of an ET tube indicates that it is in the correct position. An EtCO2 value of <1.33 KPa or an EtCO2 that falls by ≥ 25% of the baseline are the variables most significantly correlated with not achieving ROSC. Diminishing EtCO2 readings may be an indication to increase CC depth, or change a tiring CC provider to optimise CPR attempts. A sudden rise in EtCO2 is a highly specific but non-sensitive marker of ROSC.

The military serves as a vital bridge between strategic goals and societal values. This study aims to comprehensively analyze the potential and limitations of Empowering Leadership (EL) in the armed forces. Considering the current post-pandemic context and the geopolitical shifts in a volatile, uncertain, fragile, and complex world, we look at how EL can boost adaptability. We started by addressing military organization structure and evolution, followed by the EL concept and its impact on organizational performance. We discussed its benefits, progress, and role in modern military environments. The analysis points out EL benefits, despite the challenges posed by the military’s strict hierarchy, which can limit EL’s effectiveness, but concluded that this style can be effective when aligned with Mission Command. We analyze EL’s nuances in military settings, presenting three propositions and stating their potential, challenges, and limitations. This study offers insights into leadership dynamics in the military, highlighting the delicate balance between empowerment and traditional structures.
