The search for active black holes in nearby low-mass galaxies using optical and mid-IR data

Abstract: We investigated AGN activity in low-mass galaxies, an important regime that can shed light onto BH formation and evolution, and their interaction with their host galaxies. We identified 336 AGN candidates from a parent sample of ∼ 48, 000 nearby low-mass galaxies (M 10 9.5 M , z < 0.1) in the SDSS. We selected the AGN using the classical BPT diagram, a similar optical emission line diagnostic based on the He ii λ4686 line, and mid-IR color cuts. Different criteria select host galaxies with different physical p… Show more

“…With the limited sample size, it is not clear whether the red WISE color at longer wavelengths is a common feature of hard X-ray-selected low-mass AGNs. However, we note that low-mass AGNs selected using other methods, such as the BPT diagram or the presence of the He II λ4686 emission line, do not show as high a fraction of red -W W 2 3 colors (e.g., Figures 3 and 4 of Sartori et al 2015; Figure 1 of Hainline et al 2016) as our sample does, which might simply be due to the higher redshift and luminosities of our sample.…”

“…However, AGN identification methods based on red mid-IR colors become more ambiguous for low-luminosity AGNs (e.g., Hainline et al 2016). In particular, recent studies have found that the vast majority of low-mass galaxies with red mid-IR color do not show any sign of optical emission lines powered by AGNs (Satyapal et al 2014(Satyapal et al , 2016Sartori et al 2015;Secrest et al 2015). Several studies have also demonstrated that young, compact starbursts in dwarf galaxies can have mid-IR colors mimicking those of luminous AGNs (e.g., Griffith et al 2011;Izotov et al 2014;Hainline et al 2016).…”

“…At high redshift the occupation fraction might however be lower than 100% (Treister et al 2013;Weigel et al 2015;Trakhtenbrot et al 2016). Furthermore, depending on the black hole seed formation mechanism, the black hole occupation fraction in dwarf galaxies might be lower than in more massive galaxies (Volonteri et al 2008;Natarajan 2011;Greene 2012;Reines et al 2013;Moran et al 2014;Sartori et al 2015). If this possible mass dependence is not taken into account, the black hole occupation fraction can be defined in the following way using the stellar mass and black hole mass function:…”

“…In recent years, there have been a number of discoveries of AGNs in low mass galaxies or galaxies that lack classical bulges, suggesting that black holes do exist in the low bulge mass regime and are more common than previously thought (e.g., Filippenko & Ho 2003;Barth et al 2004;Satyapal et al 2007;Satyapal et al 2008;Satyapal et al 2009;Dewangan et al 2008;Shields et al 2008;Ghosh et al 2008;Izotov & Thuan 2008;Desroches & Ho 2009;Gliozzi et al 2009;McAlpine et al 2011;Jiang et al 2011;Reines et al 2011;Reines & Deller 2012;Secrest et al 2012;Ho et al 2012;Secrest et al 2013;Simmons et al 2013;Dong et al 2012;Araya Salvo et al 2012;Reines et al 2013;Coelho et al 2013;Schramm et al 2013;Bizzocchi et al 2014;Satyapal et al 2014;Reines et al 2014;Maksym et al 2014;Moran et al 2014;Yuan et al 2014;Secrest et al 2015a;Miller et al 2015;Sartori et al 2015;Mezcua et al 2016;Lemons et al 2015).…”
