“…So far, only estimates could be given [19], based on our own experience with the stopping and extraction of elements other than thorium and based on the findings by the IGISOL group in Jyväskylä [31]. Here we report on a measurement of the combined extraction and mass-purification efficiency for 229 Th 3+ ions from the MLL-IonCatcher buffer-gas stopping cell.…”

“…Despite the small branching ratio to the isomeric state, using 233 U as a production mechanism for a 229 Th source should be a viable method to produce a high flux if the efficiency can be optimized. This approach has already been studied previously at the IGISOL facility [13]. Several iterations of the gas cell were implemented and tested in order to improve the extraction efficiency of the 229 however, was only 1.6%, attained with ion extraction using an electron emitter that created a strong electric field inside the gas cell effectively "pulling" the positively-charged ions out.…”

“…As a fit curve a linear fit through the origin (assuming a negligible mass shift) was used to determine the effective field shift gradients F eff = F × K(Z). The assumption of M = 0 is based on experimental work in Th [41] where the intercept was consistent with zero. Theoretical work carried out for Fr indicates that the absence of a mass shift contribution causes an uncertainty of ∼1% in the extracted δ r 2 [42].…”
