The seasonal cycle of N2O

Abstract: We have carried out an empirical study of the seasonal cycle of nitrous oxide (N2O) using the data archived by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (NOAA‐CMDL) Global Cooperative Air Sampling Network from 1977 to 2000. In order to isolate the seasonal cycle, we first detrended the data using least square polynomial fits. The remaining variability was averaged to extract the seasonal cycle, which has an amplitude of about 0.8 ppbv. The statistical s… Show more

“…Unlike N 2 O, which has no noticeable sink in the troposphere, CO 2 has significant gross carbon exchange between the atmosphere and the surface. (The insignificance of a nitrous oxide sink in the troposphere can be similarly inferred from the weak seasonality observed [ Liao et al , 2004; Nevison et al , 2004]). The flux between the atmosphere and ocean and that between the atmosphere and land are 90 and 120 PgC/a, respectively, while the net flux to the ocean and land is only ∼1.9 PgC/a.…”

“…7c). Although the accepted value for the SP of atmospheric N 2 O was determined in air samples from the North West Pacific, the high mixing rates of tropospheric gases and the high residence times of atmospheric N 2 O over 120 years (Liao et al, 2004) make the value given by Yoshida and Toyoda (2000) a good approximation.…”

“…N 2 O has a weak seasonal cycle in the troposphere with a summer minimum and an amplitude in the Northern Hemisphere of about 0.8 ppb at the surface (Liao et al, 2004;Nevison et al, 2007). It was suggested that this is related to transport of N 2 O depleted air from the stratosphere into the troposphere (Morgan et al, 2004;Nevison et al, 2004).…”
