The second generation regional acid deposition model chemical mechanism for regional air quality modeling

Abstract: A state-of-the-art gas phase chemical mechanism for modeling atmospheric chemistry on a regional scale is presented. The second generation Regional Acid Deposition Model (RADM2) gas phase chemical mechanism, like its predecessor RADM1, is highly nonlinear, since predicted ozone, surfate, nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide concentrations are complicated functions of NOx and nonmethane hydrocarbon concentrations. The RADM2 chemical mechanism is an upgrade of RADM1 in that (1) three classes of higher alkanes are u… Show more

“…As part of this study, new lumping schemes for biogenic VOC compounds (18) were developed for SAPRC99 (19), RADM2 (20), RACM (21), and CBMZ (22). The lumping schemes were developed by first splitting the 20 MEGAN compound classes into 138 individual chemical compounds, and then assigning them to compound classes used in the respective chemical mechanisms.…”

“…Thus, the total number of transported trace species in RE-MOTE is 63, with 38 of these participating in photochemical transformations (Langmann, 2000). Photochemical production and loss in REMOTE is determined by the RADM II chemical scheme (Stockwell et al, 1990) by 163 chemical reactions in the gas phase including a wide range of hydrocarbon degradation reactions. Photolysis rates are calculated as described by Madronich (1986) and Chang et al (1987).…”

“…Early versions of WRF-Chem include the RADM2 (Regional Acid Deposition Model 2) photochemical mechanism (Stockwell et al, 1990) and the MADE/SORGAM (Modal Aerosol Dynamics Model for Europe (MADE) and Secondary Organic Aerosol Model (SORGAM)) aerosol model (Ackermann et al, 1998;Schell et al, 2001). The CBM-Z (Carbon Bond Mechanism) photochemical mechanism (Zaveri and Peters, 1999) and MOSAIC (Model for Simulating Aerosol Interactions and Chemistry) aerosol model (Zaveri et al, 2008) were later implemented by Fast et al (2006) into WRF-Chem, together with more complex treatments of aerosol radiative properties and photolysis rates.…”

“…The West African Monsoon (WAM) system is a major climate system and an important component of the regional hydrological cycle on which the livelihood of a large and growing population over Sahel depends [Sultan et al, 2005]. The WAM regulates the seasonal cycle of dry and wet seasons in response to annual cycle in solar forcing.…”
