The Seismic Response of a 1:3 Scale Model R.C. Structure with Elastomeric Spring Dampers

Abstract: In this experimental study, elastomeric spring dampers, which have a distinct re-centering characteristic, are used to retrofit a non-ductile, previously damaged 1/3 scale model reinforced concrete building frame structure which is subjected to a variety of ground motions in shaking table tests. A velocity dependent analytical model is developed and verified for the elastomeric spring dampers. This model is implemented in the widely available non-linear dynamic time history analysis computer program DRAIN-2DX … Show more

“…It can be noted that the combination of relations (1)-which defines a rounded rectangular shape of the damping response cycles, resulting from the very low values of the exponent mentioned above-and (2)-featuring a bilinear response of the spring component-produces a typical rounded parallelogram-like shape of the response cycles of this class of FV devices [3,6,14]. As a final design choice, two relatively small-sized spring dampers were selected from the manufacturer's catalogue [16], as they provided the best approximation of the preliminary design k 1 , k 2 and F 0 values.…”

“…The inherent The total dynamic reaction force exerted by the device is the sum of F d0 (t) damping and F d0 (t) non-linear elastic reaction forces corresponding to their damper and spring functions, respectively. F d0 (t) and F ne (t) can be expressed analytically as follows [6,23]:…”

“…The inherent re-centering capacity of the devices is ensured by the pressurization of the fluid imposed upon manufacturing by means of a static pre-load force. The F d (t) damping and F ne (t) non-linear elastic reaction forces corresponding to the damper and spring functions of the devices are effectively simulated by the following analytical expressions [17], [23]:…”
