The Self-Purification Ability in The Rivers of Banjarmasin, Indonesia

Abstract: The self-purification capacity of river water is an essential indicator for a healthy river. Various organic and inorganic pollutants, both from point sources and nonpoint sources, in most streams in Banjarmasin were beyond the river self-purification capacity, which caused a decrease in the river water quality. This study attempted to identify the river water pollution distribution in the city of Banjarmasin and determined the self-purification points. We used the purposive sampling technique to carry out riv… Show more

“…Notably, we found the nutrient stated had a change in some stations (station-8, see in Table 2). Rivers can recover the pollutant load within certain limits [42]. The TSI change at station 8 suggested that limitation of river self-purification ability to diatom diversity cannot be ignored in agricultural influenced rivers during ice cover [43].…”

“…It can be collectively used to solve a wide range of problems associated with different types of management, utilization and protection of water resources. The system should meet simultaneously the ecological, hygienic and technological requirements (Zubaidah, Karnaningroem and Slamet, 2019). At present, there exists no such system.…”

“…The ability of the river water self-purification is a significant measure of river quality. When the contaminants in the waterways are outside the purification capacity of the river, they create significant pollution of the water system (Tien et al, 2019). The result of self-purification indicated that the Euphrates river has a good ability to purify the pollutants coming from the Hijlan springs due to the velocity of the water flow in the study area.…”
