“…In the present investigation, all subclasses showed some response to the protein toxin. This is in agreement with other studies in which IgGl, lgG4 and or IgG3 predominated in frequency and levels of response to tetanus toxoid immunization, although some studies reported an absence of a significant IgG2 response (4,38,43). IgGl was the dominant IgG subclass, comprising 62% of the response in the nonhuman primates.…”

“…The results of the present study indicate that the IgG antibodies formed after booster vaccination with tetanus toxoid are predominantly of the IgG1 subclass, both in healthy controls and in HIVinfected individuals. This is compatible with the fact that tetanus toxoid, being a protein antigen, induces a T-celldependent immune response which consists mainly of IgG1 in healthy adults (2,11) as well as in HIV-infected individuals (1). The present study extends our earlier observations and demonstrates that HIV-infected individuals with fewer than 200 CD4 ϩ T lymphocytes exhibit a quantitatively impaired IgG1 anti-tetanus toxoid response.…”

“…After immunization of rats with GM1 ganglioside, a persistent component of the antibody response is IgM [Pestronk, unpublished observations), as in the antibodies from ALS patients. T-independent B lymphocyte responses, ones that might be expected to mediate humoral responses to the carbohydrate groups on gangliosides, would be expected to produce mainly IgM and IgG2 types of antibodies [17][18][19]. Perhaps antiganglioside antibodies are produced through this or another specialized subgroup of B-cell functions.…”
