The Severity of Complications Is Associated With Postoperative Costs After Lung Resection

Abstract: Background. The objective of this study was to verify the association between the thoracic mortality and morbidity (TMM) classification system and hospital costs after lung resection.Methods. Consecutive patients (n [ 503) submitted to anatomic lung resections were analyzed (April 1, 2014, to March 31, 2016. TMM system was used to grade the severity of complications. Postoperative costs were retrieved from the financial department using an electronic patient-level information system.Results. Two hundred seven… Show more

“…Postoperative complications were all gathered and classified into a scale from I to V according to the definition of the Clavien-Dindo classification of surgical complications. [ 11 , 12 ] Grades I and II stood for minor complications requiring no therapy or pharmacological intervention. Grades III and IV represented major complications requiring surgical intervention or life support.…”

“…Preoperative peak expiratory flow (PEF) for predicting postoperative pulmonary complications after lung cancer lobectomy: a prospective study with 725 cases lesions which are amenably resectable (6). Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are deemed to be strongly correlated to short-and long-term survival after lung cancer surgery (5,7,8). Hence, the preoperative state of candidates waiting for lung cancer surgery and predictive risks for PPCs with up-to-date data is urgently needed to be investigated, helping to set realistic expectations for perioperative interventions, therapies and care.…”

“…Regardless of surgical approach, complications bring an increase in healthcare expenditure. In this regard, Brunelli et al applied the Ottawa thoracic morbidity and mortality (TM&M) classification system devised by Seely et al and linked costs to grade of complication (21,22). The higher grade of complications was directly related to significant increases in the cost of care.…”
