The Sliding Friction of Hybrid Composite Journal Bearing Under Various Test Conditions

Abstract: Composite journal bearings are becoming more popular for marine applications because they eliminate the possibility of seizure to steel journals, which is a drawback of white-metal bearings. However, the reliability of composite bearings should be verified by various tests before its commercialization. In this study, hybrid composite journal bearings composed of carbon/phenolic and glass/epoxy laminated composites were manufactured and tested under various operating conditions and compared with whitemetal jour… Show more

“…So due to this friction the heat is generated in large quantity provided by Seong Su Kim et al [154] In one hand, the bearing makes them suitable for supporting rotors in industrial machinery with heavy loads, but on the other hand, failures in the journal bearings can lead large economic losses and major safety problems. Therefore, the bearings need to monitor them and diagnose the faults for early detection by Parno, R. et al [155] Vibration monitoring is the method of detecting the vibrations and identifying the characteristics in the rotating machinery.…”

“…microcapsules, PTFE/aramid fiber composite liners, solid-liquid lubrication, tribological properties 1 | INTRODUCTION PTFE/aramid fiber composite liners are widely used in aerospace science and engineering as an exclusive self-lubricating layer for self-lubricating spherical plain bearings due to their excellent self-lubricity, high heat resistance, as well as excellent chemical stability. 1,2 However, the clearance between the outer surface of the inner sphere and the inner surface of the outer ring in the selflubricating spherical plain bearing increases and further exceeds the applicable requirements due to poor wear resistance of PTFE in the liners under heavy-load conditions, thus leading to typical bearing failure. 3,4 As such, the enhancement of tribological properties of PTFE/ aramid fiber composite liners has become one of crucial means to extend the service life of bearings.…”
