The social dimensions of a river’s environmental quality assessment

Abstract: Integrated water resources management, promoted in developed countries, obliges to integrate social aspects with hydrological and ecological dimensions when assessing river quality. To better understand these social aspects, we propose a mixed-method to study public perceptions of an impounded river. Since the 1930s, the management of the Ain river (France) has been challenged by conflicts about the river's quality. We surveyed (using interviews and mental maps) various stakeholders along the river. The result… Show more

“…When a higher level of detail is required, a refinement of the societal assessment is advisable. Changes in perceptions, practices, and degree of place attachment along the river continuum, as well as overlapping and contradicting interests among different stakeholders, can be better captured through in-depth interviews and mental maps (Boyer et al 2019 ). Similarly, a more exhaustive process to incorporate stakeholders in the scoring, weighting, and ranking of decision options can be achieved by a multi-criteria analysis as designed by Ruangpan et al ( 2020 ) or Geodesign tools such as interactive scenario maps and real-time impact assessment (Gottwald et al 2020 ).…”

“…Regarding the interview character of many questionnaire acquirements, in addition to the preliminary qualitative data obtained through random interviews during the first survey period, it is estimated that the investigated issue has been satisfactorily assessed. According to Guest et al (2006) thematic saturation is possible to occur within the first twelve interviews, while Boyer et al (2019) noted that "a sample of 8-12 interviews of a homogeneous group is all that is needed to reach saturation".…”
