Circular economies can, at best, contribute to sustainable development. Nevertheless, the realisation of positive social and environmental impacts depends partially on the dynamics of actors' inclusion in circular processes. We identify factors affecting the inclusion of farmers in agricultural residue supply chains in India and the socio‐ecological impacts thereof. We also introduce a framework for designing inclusive and just circular practices. Information, resources, co‐operation, and co‐design act as mediators to socio‐ecological impacts. The failure to consider these aspects may lead to unintended negative consequences, such as declined soil health or delays in other operations. The positive outcomes of selling the residue are linked to improved livelihood opportunities, local development and health. Selling is only a partial solution, and other straw management methods, such as incorporation, should also be applied.

Introduction: Recently, participatory processes have been recognized as important factors inside Circular Economy (CE) initiatives. The importance of an inclusive approach – including end-users/consumers and vulnerable/oppressed groups – is acknowledged in several Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)s. Nevertheless, CE literature and Circular Design (CD) initiatives are still incipient when it comes to addressing important aspects of Participatory Design (PD), especially in Spatial Design Practices. There is no current overview on how PD methods, tools and techniques are being applied, nor are there clear indicators that can measure people’s empowerment and participation under a CE agenda. Methods: A systematic literature review is carried out to: (a) understand how PD principles are being applied in CD/CE; and (b) appraise and synthetize existing research evidence around the use of criteria and indicators involving PD and CE endeavours, with a specific look on their unfolding on Spatial Design practices. Results: 40 out of 426 final peer-reviewed journal papers in English were selected and analysed. 8 reviews and 32 original papers evidenced a clear interest on different stakeholders’ collaboration in circular supply chains and their impact on circular business models, especially in end-of-life stages. Nevertheless, very little to no attention has been given to initial design stages and non-expert’s participation. 127 participation-related CE indicators were found. However, comprehensive indicators and methods for their application targeting end-users and communities needs further exploration. PD contribution to overall sustainability is not yet disclosed. Conclusions: There is substantial increase of PD and CE literature on recent years, yet, in a separate manner. Connection between the two concepts is spare, especially in spatial design practices. Empowerment, a core component of participatory action research, is often disclosed in a superficial fashion. Inclusion of underprivileged groups and social equity in CE still needs further discussion.

Several countries and regions have adopted recycling subsidy policies to encourage recycling activities and enacted recycling laws to improve the recycling rate of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). These initiatives are designed to reduce the damage to the environment and natural resource consumption caused the enterprise. In this study, we analyze how government recycling regulations, value co-creation activities, and recycling subsidies influence the pricing and output decisions of members of a closed-loop supply chain. We develop a Stackelberg game model led by manufacturers and followed by retailers to explore the impact of value co-creation activities and recycling subsidies on the quantity of new and remanufactured products, recyclers’ prices and prices of recycled electronic parts, manufacturers’ capacity to recycle, and environmental performance in the context of government recycling regulations. Manufacturers can choose from three recycling modes: mandatory minimum remanufacturing (SDWmodel), non-mandatory partial remanufacturing (SDOmodel), and full remanufacturing (SDBmodel). The results show that 1) higher recycling subsidies optimize the recycling capacity of manufacturers, increasing the number of remanufactured products and reducing the market share of new products, which affects the price of new products. 2) higher recycling subsidies reduce the price of recycled electronic parts purchased by manufacturers, strengthen the bargaining power of consumers, increase the price of recyclers, promote the active participation of consumers in value co-creation activities, and increase the level of value co-creation. 3) higher recycling subsidies help to increase the economic value of all parties in the closed-loop supply chain (manufacturers, recyclers, consumers), but stricter recycling constraints are not always beneficial to environmental performance; environmental taxes and fees above a certain threshold of recycling constraints reduce the negative impact of production activities on the environment. The novelties and contributions of this research include proposing a new application for the Value Co-creation and Government policy utilized to Supply Chain and their impact on sustainable supply chain. In addition, we proposed three new recycling strategies and analysed the impact of environmental tax on the environmental performance. Therefore, this study aims to provide some insights for government policymakers and for managers when facing a more complex business environment.
