“…Although eastern gamagrass has been considered to have few diseases and pest issues, there have been reports of infestation by aphids ( Rhopalosiphum maidis ) that could lead to infection with maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) and sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV‐MDMV‐B) (Seifers et al., 1993). Larvae of southern cornstalk borer have also been shown to infest culms of eastern gamagrass (Springer & Dewald, 2004; Springer et al., 2011) and even reduce stands of eastern gamagrass grown in Maryland (Krizek et al., 2003). Additionally, eastern gamagrass grown in Woodward, OK, USA has been observed to be a host plant for maize billbug, causing stand loss and economic damage (Dhakal & Springer, 2018).…”

“…Contrastingly, Krizek et al (2003) observed plant death of eastern gamagrass grown in Maryland due to southern cornstalk borer, whereas Maas and Springer (2005) observed damage to plants by the southern cornstalk borer; however, no plant death was reported in Woodward, OK, USA. Additionally, Springer et al (2011) observed the three major life stages of the southern cornstalk borer within eastern gamagrass plants in Woodward, OK, USA. Therefore, it could be feasible that as the settlers began planting maize on the Great Plains, they were introducing new pests such as the southern cornstalk borer to the native stands of eastern gamagrass.…”

“…They also determined that the first generation large larvae of the European corn borer [Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner)] peaked at 650 cumulated GDD and adult emergence peaked at 900 cumulated GDD. Similarly, Springer et al [22] determined the number of the GDD for the life stages of stalk borer (Diatraea mitteri Solis [23]) in eastern gamagrass and found that it took approximately 900 cumulated GDD for the insect to complete its life cycle.…”
