The spatial arrangement of Neritina virginea (Gastropoda: Neritidae) during upstream migration in a split‐channel reach

Abstract: This paper relates differences in flow hydraulics between a main channel (MC) and a side channel (SC) of a river to patterns of upstream migration by Neritina virginea (Neritidae: Gastropoda), a dominant diadromous snail in streams of Puerto Rico (Greater Antilles). Near-bed water velocity, snail density and shell size were measured on a weekly basis between August and December 2000 along cross-sections in a main channel (MC) and an adjacent channel (SC) under a bridge crossing of the Río Mameyes of Northeaste… Show more

“…Thus, amphidromy may be a still more common life history strategy than is presently known. It is also recognised in a significant number of atyid shrimps (Crustacea: Carpenter 1982;Fievet and Eppe 2002;Page et al 2006) and neritid gastropods (Mollusca: Ford and Kinzie 1982;Blanco and Scatena 2007), something of which Myers (1949) was unaware.…”

“…Dispersal, and often migration, is an essential component of the life history and ecological niche of many organisms (Dingle & Drake, 2007). Migration has been documented for gastropod snails in tropical (Paulini, 1963; Ford & Kinzie, 1982; Schneider & Frost, 1986; Wallace, 1992; Pyron & Covich, 2003; Blanco & Scatena, 2005, 2006, 2007), temperate (Bovbjerg, 1952; Ball, Wojtalik & Hooper, 1963; Houp, 1970; Mancini, 1978; Burris, Bamford & Stewart, 1990) and intertidal habitats (Garrity & Levings, 1981; Crowe, 1996). Migration from the ocean into fresh water occurs in two subclasses, three orders and 10 gastropod families (Hutchinson, 1967; Graham, 1985; Huryn & Denny, 1997).…”

“…The island of Puerto Rico provides an excellent location to study the interactions between humans and the environment among intersecting river and road networks. Nearly all of the non‐insect, stream fauna have a diadromous life cycle and migrate through a dense river network over steep terrain (Blanco & Scatena, 2006, 2007; Kikkert, Crowl & Covich, 2009). At 438 people per km 2 , Puerto Rico also has one of the highest population densities on the planet (U.S.…”

“…Species naturally confined to highly disturbed streams at low altitudes may suffer reduced abundances (McDowall, 2007). Species that spend the majority of their life cycle in headwater streams may also be impacted if anthropogenic barriers impede or severely reduce migration (Benstead et al, 1999;Blanco & Scatena, 2007). Despite the large body of work documenting effects of roads on streams (Trombulak & Frissell, 2000), few studies have been conducted in the tropics (but see MacDonald et al, 2001;Blanco & Scatena, 2005).…”
