The state of stress in an overriding plate situated above a flat slab: The Andes of central Peru

Abstract: In the Andes of central Peru that are situated above a flat dipping slab, analysis of both structural data collected in the field and available focal mechanisms show that the Quaternary and Recent state of stress is characterized by N‐S trending extension in the Western Cordillera and along the Pacific Coast, whereas E‐W trending compression prevails in the sub‐Andean Lowlands and at the contact between the Nazca and South American plates. The Eastern Cordillera deformations suggest an intermediate state of st… Show more

“…Periods of increased convergence have been linked with uplift and deformation, whereas slow convergence rates have been associated with extensional tectonics (Sébrier et al 1988;Scheuber et al 1994). However, the variations in convergence rates as depicted by Pardo Casas and Molnar (1987) and Somoza (1998) have a significant role in increasing or decreasing the deformation, but subordinated to the absolute plate motion.…”

“…They accordingly suggested a thrust-related uplift of the western Altiplano crust paralleled by surface tilting from deep-seated processes (cf. similar interpretations north and south by Sébrier et al [1988] and Muñoz et al [2002]). explained the monocline as a gigantic tilted block of upper crust that collapsed and rotated between the subvertical Atacama and Precordilleran Fault Systems during PlioPleistocene plateau uplift.…”

“…Sébrier et al [1988], Muñoz and Charrier [1996], Farias et al [2002], and García et al [2002] detected similar faults north of 19°30 0 S-up to Southern Peru. These were active between 22 and 6 Ma with a Paleogene precursor and were associated with a similarly low magnitude of shortening.…”

“…In particular, the coastal segment south of 13 • S hosts raised Quaternary marine terraces (Regard et al, 2010), suggesting the occurrence of surface uplift at least during Quaternary times. Since the number and altitude of the terraces increases closer to the area where the Nazca ridge currently subducts, uplift of the coastal area in a radius of approximately 200 km around the ridge (roughly 12 to 14 • S latitude) is attributed to ridge subduction (Sébrier et al, 1988;Macharé and Ortlieb, 1992). Between 15 and 18 • S latitude, uplift is associated with bending of the Bolivian orocline (Noury et al, 2016).…”
