This qualitative content analysis article aims at exploring the perspectives of English language teachers on Nepali English (NE). I purposively selected six college level English language teachers from Sunsari and Morang districts and collected the required data through a semi-structured interview. The study reveals that NE has emerged in Nepal as a result of mother tongue inﬂuence, nativization of English to local contexts, and exposure from the non-native teachers during the second language acquisition process, and it is practically more appropriate than other varieties of English in Nepal. All the research participants favour NE as it is more intelligible and easier to teach and learn than the other varieties of English, promotes Nepali identity, boosts conﬁdence, reduces anxiety, and helps to resist the hegemony of British English (BE) or American English (AE). They, however, believe that more research and discourse on NE, its codiﬁ cation and standardization, and power (political, economic, and ideological) are necessary for bringing NE into concrete form. These perspectives from the English language teachers on NE pave the ground for appropriating English language policies, English language curriculum, textbooks, and pedagogy in Nepal, and rethinking the traditional treatment of errors.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has deployed English not only as its sole working language but also as a tool for forging regional identity, unity and solidarity among its ten member‐states. Drawing on the concept of ‘imagined communities’ and, by extension, ‘imagined identity regionalism’, this article provides a critical examination of this policy desire and asks the question whether the desire should be read as a form of political rhetoric or an achievable goal for ASEAN. We argue that the unifying potential of English language as an imagined regional community and identity has yet to be realised. At best, English can be seen as contributing to ASEAN's ‘functional identity’, rather than a more substantive ‘socio‐cultural identity’. It is suggested that although the birth of a distinct hybridised variety of ASEAN English may facilitate a bottom‐up linguistic identity imagination for ASEAN, such an ideal appears utopian at this time.

This study aspires to scrutinise the attitude and motivation of Airlangga University linguistics students in learning and mastering English as their L2. Sufficient proficiency and command in English are needed to support the academic success in teaching-learning process, particularly in a university. Through a total of 20 active linguistics students in Airlangga University that had been surveyed, it is found that a plenty of them still do not meet the minimum proficiency that the university has set. There are several factors that affect students’ proficiency in English of the linguistics students in Airlangga University. Through the finding of this research, it is found out that these factors derived from internal motivation of the students and also external factors that keep motivating the students to have adequate proficiency and command in English. To help the linguistics students in bridging their understanding for the teaching-learning materials which are predominantly delivered in English is the main drive of the linguistics students’ motivation to master English as their L2. This research provides students, academics, scholars, and institutions several suggestions and solutions that can be done to overcome obstacles or problems that the learners must face in order to obtain L2 learning achievements. Several things are also suggested in this research regarding what can be done in order to maximise L2 learning process.
