The Status of Kersting's Groundnut (Macrotyloma Geocarpum [Harms] Marechal and Baudet)

Abstract: Kersting's groundnut (Macrotyloma geocarpum) is a rare and underexploited leguminous crop cultivated in parts of West Africa, which now faces extinction. A study was conducted in northern Ghana, which falls within the Guinea Savannah ecological zone, to establish the status of the crop, its production constraints and prospects for its future development or improvement. Sixteen types of Kersting's groundnut were collected which could be distinguished by three seed colours. It is predominantly grown on a small s… Show more

“…Tamini [14] reported the White mottled with black eye and the Black landraces in Burkina Faso; whereas in this study, a White landrace was additionally recorded and collected. Similarly, the Brown and the White mottled with greyed orange eye were found only in Ghana and were not yet reported by previous investigations [17,35]. In this study, we therefore found additional diversity in the southern-Sudanian zone of Burkina Faso and Ghana.…”

“…Sixty-two samples grouped in six different landraces were collected across both countries instead of the five landraces reported in previous studies [12,13,17]. “…The low yield of Kersting's groundnut as for many other crops in sub-Saharan Africa is due to poor agronomic management and lack of improved varieties [29]. The use of Bradyrhizobium CB 756, a rhizobium strain, was proven to be able to induce nodulation in Kersting's groundnut [82].…”

“…As the other legume crops, Kersting's groundnut is a source of relatively cheap protein for rural populations [26]. Despite its nutritional attributes and its ability to adapt to marginal area, the crop still remains underexploited grain legume [14,24,27,28] and characterized by low yield due to poor agronomic management and lack of improved varieties [29]. It is worth noting that Kersting's groundnut is highly region specific as its cultivation is confined to West Africa [30], an additional fact that may justify its neglected status.…”
