The stratigraphy of the Carboniferous rocks around Castletown, Isle of Man

Abstract: A revised lithostratigraphic subdivision of the Dinantian rocks at the southern end of the Isle of Man is presented. Resting on the Cambro-Ordovician Manx Slate Group is the Langness Conglomerate, representing a locally-derived alluvial fan deposit. The succeeding Derbyhaven and Castletown Formations are both thinly-bedded, fine-grained dark limestones with variable amounts of shale partings; the Derbyhaven Formation has yielded fossils suggesting an early Arundian to Holkerian age, whilst the Castletown Forma… Show more

“…Riding (1991a) termed such fabrics 'cryptic microbial carbonates' and they have been described from numerous fossil buildups (e.g. Schwarzacher 1961;Scoffin 1971;Alberstadt et al 1974;F1/igel & Steiger 1981;Mountjoy & Riding 1981;Pratt 1982;Pratt & James 1982;Bourque & Gignac 1983;Reid 1987;Dickson et al 1987;Bridges & Chapman 1988;Sun & Wright 1989: Somerville et al 1992aKelly & Somerville 1992;Guo & Riding 1992a;Leinfelder et al 1993;Gutteridge 1995;Lees & Miller 1995). Peloidal fabrics have also been described from many Holocene reefs where they generally form cement crusts in intra-or interskeletal pores (Friedman et al 1974;Macintyre 1985;Friedman 1993).…”

“…1, location A). The Mississippian succession of the SE Isle of Man (Dickson et al 1987;Chadwick et al 2001) is dominated by a sequence of marine carbonates that exhibit both fracture-related dolomitization with minor Pb-Zn sulphide mineralization (Lamplugh 1903, Shelton et al 2011) and hematite. Observable hematite mineralization is exposed (Derbyhaven Formation) in the vicinity of Skillicore (Site IOM6) and Cass-ny-Hawin (Site IOM7), where examples occur in association with small (centimetre-scale), subvertical, north-south-oriented, ferroan dolomitefilled fractures (Skillicore), and a c. 1 m wide, NE-SW-oriented, mineralized fault zone (Cass-ny-Hawin).…”

“…The most convincing evidence for hydrocarbon migration related to Tertiary activity is in bitumens within NW-SE trending fractures parallel to Tertiary dykes cutting the Carboniferous section at Castletown, Isle of Man (section described in Dickson et al 1987). The bitumens are coeval (intergrown) with authigenic quartz crystals within calcite veins (Fig.…”
