The stress test: Can stress ever be beneficial?

Abstract: Abstract:The human brain needs an optimal amount of challenge in order to perform optimally. This is because challenge activates the neurotransmitter noradrenaline (NA) which, at optimal levels, facilitates good brain performance; in contrast, when levels of NA are either too low (sleepy, jaded, bored, mood low) or too high (stressed, anxiety, pressure), the brain underperforms because of the key neuromodulatory effect of noradrenaline. Moderate amounts of stress can actually increase performance and attention… Show more

“…This long-lasting functional integration can be identified as cognitive reserve ( 65 ). Robertson argues that the type of positive stress that we experience when we introduce challenge, novelty, and the element of surprise leads to lifelong cognitive reserve ( 66 ). Adding an additional task or challenge to an already established task, can add positive stress resulting in increasing noradrenaline, which, can in turn can lead to improved attention and, when sustained, ultimately result in neuronal plasticity ( 65 ).…”

“…A genuine and positive environment may lead to collaborative behaviour incorporating a collective gain. Neuroscientific evidences suggest that stress and anxiety management (Robertson, 2017), creating a fear-free organisation (Brown, Kingsley, & Paterson, 2015) and building trust (Zak, 2017), can significantly contribute to change management in the organisation.…”
