The structure of medium-scale pool fires

Abstract: This report documents a series of time-averaged gas species measurements made along the centerline of methanol, ethanol, acetone, and methane pool fires steadily burning in a quiescent environment. All gas species measurements are obtained using a Gas Chromatograph/ Mass Spectrometer System (GC/MS) for gas samples extracted at various heights above the fire and repeated at least twice at each location. Gas species volume fractions are determined via the GC/MS using predetermined calibration factors. Soot mass … Show more

“…Figure 13. Ratio of the mean temperature (μ) to the standard deviation (σ) as a function of the mean temperature compared to previous results reported in 30 cm diameter methanol pool fires [4,26]. Weckman and Strong [4] measured temperature in a 30.5 cm diameter methanol pool fire with a rim height of 1 cm using a 50 µm wire diameter, bare bead, type S (Pt 10% Rh/Pt), the thermocouple is similar to the thermocouples used in this study.…”

“…These local measurements are essential to provide insight into the complex chemical composition of this medium‐scale pool fire. These data, in conjunction with previous measurements of the mass loss, total and radiative heat feedback, calorimetry, radiative emission, and the temperature and velocity fields begin to provide a comprehensive picture of the structure of the 30 cm methanol pool fire 3‐5,7‐9 …”
