Assembly is an essential part of the product life cycle. Inefficient assembly has a direct impact on the effectiveness and quality of the product. One of the main problems of current on-site assembly operations is clear and efficient guidance, which consists of two aspects: the lack of efficient reuse of existing data and confusion in the form of presentation. In order to reduce errors and the time required to perform assembly tasks, we aim to propose an integrated lightweight 3D interactive method to guidance in assembly process. It enables the reuse of previous process design and simulation stages, which can reduce the duplication of content and enhance the content preparation efficiency. At the same time, the method is platform-independent, does not rely on high-performance workstations and can be presented on mobile, cross-platform. One case of disassembly the graphic card in the computer is presented to verify the method.

Fault diagnosis IETM is a digital technical manual which integrates editing, management, display and publication and faces the field of fault diagnosis. In its development process, there are some problems such as complex data management and difficult interaction. The successful application of XML technology becomes the key to solve these problems. In this paper, based on S1000D IETM development standard, the main characteristics of XML and its related technologies are first introduced, and then the application of XML and its related technologies in fault diagnosis IETM is analyzed and studied, including the creation of fault information data module, the display control of fault information and the comprehensive management of data. A conversion method between XML document data and database data is proposed, and the design process of fault diagnosis IETM based on XML is discussed. Finally, a fault diagnosis IETM display system based on XML is preliminarily developed by combining the related technologies mentioned above. Experiments show that XML technology can effectively manage the information in fault diagnosis IETM and display it to users in an interactive way, which has important theoretical value and certain practical significance for developing fault diagnosis IETM and exploring the deeper application of XML in IETM.

PurposeA framework is being developed to help Integrated Electronic Technical Publications (IETP) consultation inside and outside the aviation maintenance hangar. The expected results are the reduction in time to access the desired IETP and to assist mechanics while performing maintenance tasks using voice recognition.Design/methodology/approachThe work is being conducted based on literature review and consultation with mechanics from the aviation industry, through questionnaires. The development will be made through study cases by building a core search engine and mobile applications to support the mechanics during the maintenance activities.FindingsThe identified problem in small maintenance shops and defence organizations suggests that IETP are not entirely accessible before and during the maintenance activity. Such organizations suffer from information and communications technology (ICT) low infrastructure capability and demand access to multiple IETP databases as they usually support different aircraft. To have access to the IETP through voice assistant application will help mechanics to access the IETP, including when they would be with dirty hands and having difficulty in using mobile devices with touch displays.Originality/valueThe framework being developed will give mechanics the ability to quickly find any existing IETP to support its maintenance task at any time and in any place with low demanding for ICT infrastructure. The architecture will support different applications, and the identified priority is for IETP viewers to the most demanding functionality of specification ASD S1000D. This approach could also help in troubleshooting activities since COVID-19 brought new demands for the social distancing for mechanics.
