“…However, its origin has not escaped controversy, with endogenic volcanic and/or magmatic components proposed in whole or in part (Stevenson, 1972;Muir, 1984;Dressler et al, 1987;Lowman, 1992;Chai and Eckstrand, 1994;Gibbins, 1994;Lightfoot et al, 1997a,b;Keays and Lightfoot, 1999). Igneous rocks of the Sudbury structure include the felsic norite, quartz gabbro, and granophyre units which comprise the main mass, the sublayer, and the quartz diorite offset dikes ( Fig.…”

“…The structure has an estimated diarmeter of ~180-250 km (Peredery and Morrison, 1984;Dressler et al, 1987;Grieve et al, 1991) and is strongly deformed due to thrusting from the southeast Schwerdtner, 1990, Milkereit et al, 1992). Shock-metamorphosed target rocks beneath the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC), shatter cones up to ~20 km from the SIC, strong brecciation of target rocks up to 80 km from the SIC, and shock-metamorphosed target rock clasts and recrystallized impact glasses in thick suevitic breccia deposits of the Onaping Formation within the Sudbury Basin provide evidence that the structure was formed as a result of impact.…”

“…The Sudbury Structure (SS) is a unique geologic feature hosting one of the largest Ni-Cu reserves in the world, and its origin has been vigorously debated for more than a century (Guy-Bray 1972;Pye et al 1984;Dressler et al 1987;Grieve et al 1991;Boerner et al 1 9 9 4~) .…”
