The surgical management of early-stage cervical cancer

Abstract: There is a growing trend to practice less aggressive surgery in order to preserve fertility in young women and avoid an excess of treatment in some selected patients. Therefore, nerve-sparing techniques can help to improve the quality of life. More studies are needed to demonstrate oncologic results of the sentinel node technique. Laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery can substitute open surgical treatment.

“…Stage was attributed in accord to the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology criteria. 2 Interventions were performed under general endotracheal anesthesia. Women received a single dose of prophylactic antibiotic 1 hour before the surgery; antithrombotic prophylaxis was administered with low-molecular-weight heparin (30 days) and compression stockings (until full mobilization).…”

“…2 Traditionally, radical hysterectomy is related to a high rate of intraoperative and postoperative morbidity, including severe surgical complications and pelvic dysfunctions (eg, urinary, anorectal, and sexual dysfunctions). 2Y 4 The introduction of minimally invasive (ie, laparoscopic and robotically assisted) surgery has modified the approach of CC patients.…”

“…Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is responsible for most of the new cervical cancer incidence, especially in countries where the screening program and vaccination are not present [111]. Although early-stage and locally-advanced cervical cancers are well cured, patients diagnosed with metastatic and recurrent cervical cancer have poor and limited treatment options [113]. Thus, understanding the molecular events associated with cervical carcinogenesis might benefit new treatment strategies.…”

“…However, although early-stage and locally advanced disease can be treated with potential curative intent (Pimple, Mishra, & Shastri, 2016), patients with metastatic and recurrent CC have poor prognosis with limited palliative treatment options (Kitagawa et al, 2015;Li, Wu, & Cheng, 2016). Significant improvements in our understanding of altered molecular events in tumor cells are leading to investigate new targets and new potential agents (Tomao et al, 2014).…”
