The sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), is a secondary pest causes great damage to cereal grains, commodities, and packaged food all over the world. Beyond cereal grains, this species is a concern because it may be differently impacted based on variation in temperature. Therefore, development time, larval and pupal survival, and adult emergence of O. surinamensis were evaluated on various substrates at different temperatures regimes (22, 28, 32, and 38 °C). With highly significant differences, the larval stage duation of O. surinamensis ranged from 19.2 ± 1.26 days on rice grains to 25.6 ± 0.98 days on white maize grains. The insect exhibited the highest rate of larval survival (95%) on rice grain followed by oat (90%) and wheat grain (89%). The shortest larval stage duration was measured at 38°C (12.1± 0.98 d), followed by 32°C (16.4±1.03 d) with highly significant differences. The total immature stage durations ranged from 22.9 days at 38 °C to 54.2 days at 22 °C. The percentage of larvae that survived varied from 62% at 38°C to 91% at 32°C. The average number of adults that emerged at a temperature of less than 38°C was 5.1 ± 1.12 individuals, which was the lowest recorded value. Therefore, the grain type and temperature range plays a significant role in determining sawtoothed grain beetle infestation, which might have future implications for controlling this insect pest.

The present experiments were carried out in the laboratory belonging to the Economic Entomology Department at Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University Egypt. To obtain the insect; samples of the infested stored rice with different stages of Oryzaephilus surinamensis were transferred to the laboratory and kept under laboratory conditions until adults emergence. The total development of immature stages in relation to the different food types were recorded. The shortest developmental time was on dry dates and the longest time was on semi-dry palm (32.6±1.04 and 36.9±0.96 days, respectively) with highly significantly differences in development times of the insect among food types in non-choice test. The highest survival rates of the larval and pupal stages of the insect was when the larvae fed on dry dates (87.0 and 96.6%, respectively). The highest number of the adults emerged and the highest weight loss were obtained when larvae fed on dry dates in non-choice test. The highest average number of the attracted adults, female egg-laying and F1 progeny were obtained on dry dates in free-choice test. In free-choice test, the highest immature survival rateand the largest weight loss were obtained on dry dates.

Developmental ability of Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) was examined on six different sorghum milling fractions: Bran, Shorts, Cgrits, Fgrits, Red dogs, Flour, and also on a standard diet of Oat Flakes. For this purpose, a 1-day-old egg was placed in a vial containing 1 g of one of the sorghum fractions and exposed to three temperatures: 25, 30, or 32°C. All vials were checked daily for pupal and adult emergence and mortality of immatures. The developmental time was significantly affected by the type of sorghum fraction. After two weeks, for most of the temperatures examined, the longest developmental times in most cases for both pupation and adult emergence were observed in Flour and Oat flakes. Increasing the temperature from 25 to 30 accelerated the development, while adult emergence time did not differ between 30 and 32°C for all fractions except Flour. Egg mortality ranged from 11 to 78%, while larval and pupal mortality ranged from 0 to 22 and 0 to 45%, respectively for all sorghum fractions and different temperatures tested. Moreover, the mean overall immature mortality occurred at 30°C was 49.2, 39.7, and 65.1% at 25, 30, and 32°C for all the diets examined. The findings of the present work show that O. surinamensis can develop and survive in sorghum milling fractions and that the optimal temperatures for growth enhancement are 30 and 32°C. The temperatures within sorghum milling facilities could support O. surinamensis development on milling fractions if they are not addressed through phytosanitary measures.
