The synthesis and characterization of monomeric etherified methylolated melamines using gel permeation chromatography and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Abstract: synopsisA series of monomeric etherified methylolated melamines were prepared and characterized by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Gel permeation chromatographic analysis permits a rapid and accurate determination of the monomer and polymer content of the products. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy permits the qualitative identification of the etherifying alcohols and a quantitative estimation of the alkoxy groups present. The molar ratios of alcohols necessary to… Show more

“…However, this reaction is practically inexistent since first, the majority of the amine formed will react with isocyanates to form the polyurea matrix, and second, the MF crosslinking reaction according to Scheme 2 is negligible at room temperature (while it increases exponentially with temperatures above 100°C). Therefore, the crosslinking via amines occurs mainly during curing of the resin 16–21…”

“…The percent etherification of the acrylamide in the polymer may be calculated using Equation 5: % Etherification = (5) where Ma = moles of etherifying alcohol per gram of dried polymer and Ma = moles of acrylamide per gram of dried polymer.…”
