The theory‐practice gap in nursing: from research‐based practice to practitioner‐based research

Abstract: The aim of nursing research is generally agreed to be the generation of knowledge, and whilst this is a relevant aim in theory-based disciplines such as sociology, the primary concern of nursing is with practice. Using examples drawn mainly from the field of mental health, it will be argued in this paper that the application of generalizable, research-based knowledge to individual, unique, person-centred practice, the so-called 'research-based practice' advocated by the Department of Health, is one of the main… Show more

“…Yet, despite this need, techne and phronesis are not well recognized by academics. This results in the theories of pure researchers dictating actions of those in practice (Pryjmachuk 1996), or practitioners ignoring theoretical insights because they do not find them useful (Rolfe 1998). Standard attempts to close the perceived "gap" between academia and practice then usually involves academics trying to develop better strategies for dissemination and greater use of research findings, which makes the gap wider by suppressing professional judgment and forcing practitioners to use ill-suited research findings (Rolfe 1998).…”

“…This predicament has been labeled the theory-practice gap (Rolfe, 1998). The theory-practice gap has long been identified as a source of major concern across other disciplines, including marketing (Lilien, Rangaswamy, van Bruggen, & Wierenga, 2002), accounting (Scapens, 1994), management (Van de Ven & Johnson, 2006), and law (Saks, Larsen, & Hodne, 1996).…”

“…Health action research is promoted as a way of bridging the theory/ practice gap (Rolfe, 1998). However, most educators of health professionals teach their students in the Education Zone (the university) and then send them back into the Hospital Zone (the hospital or community) to implement changes.…”
