The therapeutic potential of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in premature ovarian failure

Abstract: With the development of regenerative medicine, a variety of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are increasingly considered for the treatment of premature ovarian failure (POF). Reportedly, bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMSCs) improve the ovarian reserve, which mainly depends on homing and paracrine activities. Furthermore, paracrine factors secreted by these stem cells play an important role in ovarian recovery. Relevant studies indicate that BMSC transplantation has some positive effects on the treatment of POF in ani… Show more

“…Despite the fact that mesenchymal stem cells are characterized by a low immunologic profile, allogeneic stem cell transplantation could lead to severe graft rejection, posing a risk for the patients' health. Studies in the field demonstrate that autologous stem cell transplantation is related with enhanced therapeutic efficiency compared to allogeneic transplantation in one out of the four women treated with allogeneic transplantation could face severe chronic gynecological graft disease 30,34 . One of the antipodes, autologous stem cell transplantation could serve as a potential solution in an effort to eliminate the graft rejection risk.…”

“…They also maintain the function of ovaries by suppressing the inflammatory responses and reducing OS (He et al, ). Some cytokines, such as IL‐6 also regulate the function of the immune system (He et al, ). As noted previously, chemotherapy is the most widely recognized method of treatment applied in patients with cancer underwent surgery and radiation therapy.…”

“…In addition, BM‐MSCs can be easily isolated and amplified in vitro and migrate to the injured tissues (He et al, ). Furthermore, due to paracrine and immunomodulation functions, these cells can be differentiated into particular sorts of cells in the tissue to remake the local microenvironment (He et al, ). By enhancing the function of endogenous cells and regulation of immune response, they are committed to fix tissue damages.…”

“…MSC treatment modulates the immune response and decrease the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, directing the immune response from a predominantly proinflammatory to an anti-inflammatory profile [11,12]. MSCs secret certain cytokines that are helpful for anti-apoptosis and antifibrosis, including vascular endothelial, insulin-like, and hepatocyte growth factors [13]. Recently, stem cell therapy was evaluated in the treatment of parasitic infections.…”
