The total nitrogen content of egg albumin and other proteins

Abstract: I should like to express my thanks to the following: to F. C. Bawden, under whose auspices the work was carried out, and N. W. Pirie, for advice; to P. H. Gregory for potato samples and help in planning the experiments; to H. M. Sinclair for a culture of Phycomyces blake8leeanus; to my brother, A. P. Meiklkjohn, for calling my attention to the possibilities of the method, and to E. M. Crook and D. J. Higgons for supplies of solanin6 and solanidine.

“…Analytical methods Spore number, mycelial dry weight and reducing sugars were determined as before (Done et al 196l), and total nitrogen was estimated by a micro-Kjeldahl procedure (Chibnall, Rees & Williams, 1943). Specific rotations for the D line of the sodium spectrum were measured for 0.5-2.0 % (wlv) solutions in chloroform at room temperature in a 1 dm.…”

“…Nitrogen was determined by a micro-Kjeldahl method (Chibnall, Rees & Williams, 1943); reducing sugars by the method of Hanes (1g2g), using a standard of the appropriate sugar; and sucrose by the method of Dubois et al (1956), after hydrolysis in 0.5 N-HCl at IOO "C for 15 min. Glycerol was determined by a semi-micro adaptation of the method of Lambert & Neish (1950).…”

“…Total S was determined by the method of Jones & Letham (1956). Total N was determined by the method of Chibnall, Rees & Williams (1943). The 35S activity was determined quantitatively by the method of Henriques, Kistiakowski, Margnetti & Schneider (1946), and for approximate analyses by the counting of dry samples on small polythene trays.…”
