Introduction: Physical activity (PA) interventions for women with breast cancer (BC) are extensively documented, but its adherence remains modest and patients with severe psychological distress are often excluded. Consequently, this study aimed to test the feasibility and acceptability of a remote PA intervention coupled with motivational text messages among women with BC experiencing severe depressive and/ or anxiety symptoms. Method: A three-phase-single-case experimental study design was conducted among 18 women with BC reporting high levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms: A (pre-intervention; 2-week), B (intervention; 12-week), A’ (post-intervention; 2-week). Our intervention was based on the American College of Sport Medicine’s guidelines and behavior change techniques (BCTs) and included 2 to 3 supervised PA session per week, for at least 30 minutes, coupled with 4 to 7 weekly personalized text messages. Feasibility (satisfaction and drop-out rates), acceptability (participation rates and therapeutic alliance), fidelity (quality of BCTs delivered), and the effectiveness of PA level and physical fitness were assessed. Results: Participants expressed high satisfaction and reported an excellent working alliance with their kinesiologist. Notably, there were very high participation rates (90%) and a low dropout rate (11%). However, only 3 patients significantly increased their PA level between Phase A and A’. Conclusion: This study highlighted the importance to personalize and individualize remote PA interventions for women with BC, particularly those self-reporting severe depressive or anxiety symptoms. The combination of a remote PA intervention with daily text messages appears to be very suitable to increase their adherence.

Despite both WHO's recommendation to increase the levels of physical activity, and the existence of numerous intervention programs, there is still a lack of sustainable tools to help people adopt and maintain a healthy level of physical activity. Currently, motivational technologies aimed at positively influencing user behavior seem to be relevant. In this article, we describe how we collected and analyzed the needs of future users of a motivational mobile application for running. As part of a participatory design approach, we conducted wireframe workshops (10 participants divided into 3 groups), where participants created their wireframes with functionalities and human-machine interactions essential to them. We categorized the most recurring themes and then, they were evaluated by focus groups (9 participants divided into 3 groups). Our results suggest that personalization and gamification are crucial elements for motivation and engagement. Malgré la recommandation de l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé d'augmenter les niveaux d'activité physique (AP), et malgré l'existence de nombreux programmes d'intervention, il manque encore des outils pour que la population adopte et maintienne un niveau d'AP sain et durable. Aujourd'hui, les technologies motivationnelles ayant pour but d'influencer positivement le comportement des utilisateurs semblent être pertinentes. Nous décrivons dans cet article comment nous avons récolté et analysé les besoins de futurs utilisateurs d'application mobile motivationnelle pour la course à pied. Dans le cadre d'une démarche de conception participative, nous avons mené des ateliers maquette (10 participants répartis en 3 groupes), où les participants ont créé leurs maquettes avec des fonctionnalités et des interactions humain-machine essentielles pour eux. Nous avons catégorisé les thèmes les plus récurrents et, ensuite, ils ont été évalués par des focus group (9 participants répartis en 3 groupes). Nos résultats suggèrent que la personnalisation et la gamification sont des éléments capitaux pour la motivation et l'engagement.

Background: Women with breast cancer live with the burden of the disease, its treatment, and the psychosocial consequences of illness, often contributing to the experience of psychological distress. At this end, physical activity (PA) is an evidence-based strategy to decrease depressive and anxiety symptoms. However, no study has yet investigated how those psychological symptoms fluctuate and vary during a PA intervention at the individual level, especially for individuals with severe psychological distress. Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the effects of a 12-week remote PA intervention on daily level of depressive and anxiety symptoms among women with breast cancer and severe depressive or anxiety symptoms. Method: A N-of-1 study followed an ABA’ design was conducted. Each A phase (2-week) represents pre- and post-intervention phase and B phase (12-week) represents the intervention phase. For the whole 16 weeks, participants received a daily prompt to report their depressive and anxiety levels. The intervention combined 2 to 3 (un)supervised remote PA sessions per week coupled with weekly text messages. Results: Sixteen participants completed the intervention. A significant decrease of depressive and anxiety symptoms was found for 9 and 7 participants, respectively. Different temporal patterns of depressive and anxiety were observed during and after the intervention. Interestingly, the impact of PA intervention was generally not immediate and gradual. Conclusion: This study supports the utility of remote PA intervention to improve depressive and anxiety symptoms in women with breast cancer and poor mental health.
