The trouble with social computing systems research

Abstract: Social computing has led to an explosion of research in understanding users, and has the potential to similarly revolutionize systems research. However, the number of papers designing and building new sociotechnical systems has not kept pace. In this paper we analyze the reasons for this disparity, ranging from misaligned methodological incentives, evaluation expectations and research relevance compared to industry. We suggest improvements for the community to consider and evolve so that we can chart the futur… Show more

“…It has used EV to refer to fieldwork (Carter, Mankoff, Klemmer, & Matthews, 2008;Bernstein, Ackerman, Chi, & Miller, 2011), real-life or naturalistic conditions where experimental tasks are performed with high levels of fidelity (Castro, Favela, & GarciaPena, 2011), and studies "where subjects are totally unaware of being tested, testing being performed during their natural activity on the web" (Guerini, Strapparava, & Stock, 2012). None of these interpretations actually refer to EV.…”

“…Yet there are numerous debates and disagreements within HCI about what constitutes an adequate systems evaluation [8,22]. Some scholars have even claimed that the bar for evaluation at UIST, CHI, and other HCI publication venues is increasingly unrealistic for systems papers [1,14] by insisting on having results from controlled studies or large cohorts of representative users.…”

“…Specifically, we present an in-depth case study of several evaluation methods applied to LemonAid [4] (Figure 1) over the last five years, from its inception as a university research project to commercialization through a venture capital financed startup called AnswerDash. 1 We trace the motivations for adopting different HCI methods at different stages during the evolution of the research, product, and startup business and the tradeoffs made between user-centered design and what we call adoption-centered design-understanding and designing for product adopters and stakeholders beyond just end users.…”

“…Nonetheless, snowball sampling is often embraced as the only way to approach hidden or marginalized populations, such as drug users [17], prostitutes [19], pickpockets [15], and low-income respondents in the developing world [13,18,22,23,26]. Researchers have also championed the use of snowball sampling in social computing research, where a global directory of all users is usually unavailable and snowball sampling can be viewed as a form of convenience sample [4].…”
