‘Looking to the Future and the University in an Inclusive and Sustainable Way’: A Career Intervention for High School Students

Career guidance needs new perspectives, considering the challenges that characterize our future, and it cannot exist without solidarity, inclusion, and attention to environmental challenges. It should also positively influence stakeholders to invest in the values of the 2030 Agenda recently proposed by the United Nations, and its encouragement to think about some of the emergencies that new generations will have to face in the future. Based on these premises, we designed and validated a sustainable career guidance intervention for high school students. The participants (N = 75) were assigned to an experimental or a control group. All of the participants answered questions pre- and post-intervention to measure career adaptability, training, future investment, and wishes about the feature. The students from the sustainable career intervention group increased their post-intervention scores on control, curiosity, confidence, training, and future investment. They also indicated future wishes that take into more account attention to relationships and social challenges.

This chapter explores and questions the aims of public policy for career development. In the early years of the 21st century, an international consensus emerged in the literature describing the intentions of governments when they seek to intervene in the careers of their citizens. A case is made for a broader conception of the socially desirable outcomes from career interventions. Drawing on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a systematic framework of six types of policy goal for career development services is proposed: (i) labour market goals, (ii) educational goals, (iii) social equity goals, (iv) health and well-being goals, (v) environmental goals, and (vi) peace and justice goals. The latter three categories represent new or relatively neglected areas of focus. Cross-cutting themes of social justice, sustainability, and societal change are highlighted.

In recent decades support for the design of active lives has generally been conceived as an aid intended for qualified workers to manage their careers on the labor market. This conception is, for example, the basis of the official definition of this support published by the Council of the European Union in 2008. However, alternative definitions insist on all of the dimensions of any active life and wonder about the the view of the future to which such support refers. The very serious current crisis of the “anthropo-capitalocene” leads precisely to a focus on reflections on this future. Such a concern is at the heart of new interventions to support the design of active lives. It deals with the following question: by what forms of active life can we achieve the objectives of sustainable and equitable development defined by the major international organizations and the specialists in these matters? Developing this renewal of support for the design of active lives involves specifying the conceptual field on which to base it, experimenting with new interventions and setting up operating devices to propose them to the public.
