“…The values for cc2u excretion, on the other hand, were con siderably more consistent. These differences probably reflect the fact that < X 2u is under hor monal control while the excretion of albumin and other plasma proteins (TUP) may be the consequence of the chronic glomerulonephrosis [7,8,13], Rats may exhibit considerable in dividual variation in developing glomerular lesions [9,18]; some may be more resistant than others. This is demonstrated by figure 2a, b showing the excretion of TUP and albu min for 3 representative rats.…”

“…The hepatic biosynthesis of this protein is under the control of androgens [4,5] and glucocorticoids [5], In the young male, the ot2u represents 25-30% of the total urinary pro tein (TUP) [6]. As the rat ages, the spontane ous degeneration of the kidney, called chronic or progressive glomerulonephrosis [7] leads to an increased excretion of TUP [8][9][10][11][12], In a study relating morphologic changes with age, Hirolcawa [13] demonstrated a fusion of podocytes and a glomerular thickening as early as 3 months of age. Since these changes are ac companied by an excretion of protein in the urine, it is thought that proteinuria is a con sequence of the renal changes.…”

“…This correlates well with physiologic changes in the aging rat kidney. There is a progressive increase in glomerular basement membrane permeability to proteins, causing decreasing selectivity of urine protein excretion (7,28). The accumulation of mesangial material occurs later than the onset of glomerular permeability to proteins.…”

“…One hundred and ten male rats of a non-inbred Wistar strain were housed in II cages in a small air-conditioned room (temperature 25 ±1° C, relative humidity 55±10%) and fed a pelleted diet as described previously (Everitt, 1958a).…”
