The Use of Activity, Classroom Discussion, and Exercise (ACE) Teaching Cycle for Improving Students’ Engagement in Learning Elementary Linear Algebra

Abstract: The main focus of the study was to identify the the effects of the ACE teaching cycle approach on students' engagement in learning of Elementary Linear Algebra. The Elementary Linear Algebra course was delivered at the Mathematics Education Study Program of State University of Padang, Indonesia. An action research methodology was adopted for the study and the constructivist theory was used as a theoretical framework. This study used mixed methods to collect, describe, and interpret the data. The data were coll… Show more

“…However, it also goes a step further by providing specificity regarding the importance of such tools within a middle school science context. While extant research has explored technology's role across various disciplines and educational tiers (e.g., Salas-Pilco et al, 2022;Syarifuddin & Atweh, 2022;Wekerle et al, 2022;Yu et al, 2022)…”

“…The effects of teaching activities, the development of mathematical concepts, or teaching strategies on students' algebraic thinking were examined and concluded. Pattern tasks positively affect the algebraic thinking of the students (Afonso, 2019;Guler & Celik, 2021;Mulligan et al, 2020;Obara, 2019;Syarifuddin & Atweh, 2022;Walkowiak, 2014). Also, number sense (Adamuz-Povedano et al, 2021;Somasundram, 2021), operation sense (Somasundram, 2021), symbol sense (Somasundram, 2021), non-numerical quantities (Venenciano et al, 2020), positive integers and rational numbers have effect on the development of algebraic thinking.…”

“…Similarly, Borji and Voskoglou (2017) reveal that the implementation of APOS-ACE cycles benefits students much more than the traditional lectures did. The APOS ACE instructional approach based on the digital platform countered the low levels of students' engagement in learning mathematics (Syarifuddin & Atweh, 2022). Students became more engaged their learning and the aspects of anxiety and frustration decreased.…”
