This study aims to find out how students' perspectives on learning English use 21st century learning strategies through a multimodal approach to teaching English for EFL students. A lecture was conducted online for one semester (four months) by using Islamic topics as learning materials. The learning materials were presented and discussed, then students were asked to write or talk about the topics. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to data collection through the provision of questionnaires and interviews with 47 students of the Islamic Broadcasting Program at the Faculty of Islamic Religion at a private Islamic university in Bogor, Indonesia, in the English language course. From the data collected through a set of questionnaires, it can be concluded that, 1) the majority of respondents are interested in using Islamic materials to learn English; 2) the majority of respondents state that Islamic materials assisted them in improving their English language skills; 3) The majority of respondents are interested in using online Islamic resources. Furthermore, respondents stated that the multimodal approach to learning is very interesting, very good, and can help them to learn English. In addition, students wished that direct interaction between lecturers and students could continue to function well. Hence, the use of multimodal-based materials could provide interactive opportunities between lecturers and students.

This research aims to discover whether extensive reading has fulfilled the extensive reading program principle and whether the program is able to emerge reading habit. This research was conducted due to the evaluation of an extensive reading program that has rarely been done and the program has not significantly been able to increase library visits as an indication of good reading. This research will provide insight for educators, decision makers and students about the implementation of extensive reading programs so that programs can be carried out better. This research is descriptive research which is categorized into qualitative research. data obtained through observation and group interviews. data was analyzed using Miles and Hubberman models. research found extensive reading has not fully fulfilled the extensive reading principles. Some students struggle with reading, wherein there is a lot of difficult vocabulary. Besides, students' reading habits have emerged. students are glad to read online through a reading application.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah program extensive reading telah melaksanakan prinsip extensive reading serta apakah program mampu memunculkan kebiasaan membaca siswa. Penelitian dilaksanakan karena evaluasi program extensive reading jarang dilaksanakan serta program tersebut belum dapat meningkatkan kunjungan ke perpustakaan secara signifinikan dimana ini merupakan indikasi meningkatnya kecintaan peserta didik untuk membaca. penelitian ini akan memberikan wawasan kepada pendidik, pembuat keputusan dan peserta didik tentang pelaksanaan program sehingga program dapat dilaksanakan dengan lebih baik. penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif yang merupakan penelitian kualitatif. data diperoleh melalui pengamatan dan wawancara kelompok. data dianalisis menggunakan model Miles and Huberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan program extensive reading belum sepenuhnya memenuhi kriteria extensive reading. beberapa peserta didik masih kesulitan dalam membaca dimana banyak kosakata yang sulit ditemukan. Selain itu, kebiasaan membaca peserta didik sudah mulai muncul. peserta didik menyenangi membaca daring melalui aplikasi membaca.

Senior High School Teachers’ Challenges and Coping Strategies in Teaching Literature in Online Environment

The teaching-learning process in Indonesia was mostly done online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This sudden shift caused challenges for EFL teachers. Aside from providing linguistic lessons, EFL teachers also struggled in providing literature lessons, as it had distinct ways of teaching from linguistics. However, only a few studies researched the teachers’ challenges in teaching literature online and the ways they solved them. Therefore, this study aims to explore the teachers’ challenges in teaching literature in an online environment and their strategies to deal with them. This study used a narrative inquiry method and the data were gathered with a semi-structured interview from senior high school teachers. the results showed that the teachers faced challenges with their technology uses, including internet, websites, applications, and gadgets; students, including their internet, understanding, and participation; and subject delivery, including material adjustments, students’ interests, and accessible activities. Teachers’ strategies were: having asynchronous classes, posting materials ahead, utilizing WhatsApp, helping students’ technology experience, assisting their online learning, providing accessible learning activities, using familiar literary works, and giving less demanding activities. This study can help the teachers to identify their challenges in teaching literature in an online environment and find the solutions.
