The use of geocell as soil stabilization and soil erosion countermeasures

Abstract: This work proposed a composite soil reinforcement method to support the vegetation growth and improve slope stability using geocell structures and wheat straws. Twelve physical models were developed for assessing rainfall intensities, slope steepness and geocell sizes on the soil erosion. The results showed that: (1) the geocell reinforced slopes maintained a good integrity, but the bare slope showed horizontal cracks; (2) the soil erosion was less than 40 g and more than 4000 g under the 50 mm/h and 100 mm/h … Show more

“…The differences in erosion values can be attributed to the higher land cover percentages in plots B and C due to the application of 5-mesh geo-jute, which enhances the soil's ability to withstand erosion. This is consistent with the study by Song et al (2021), which states that high slopes increase erosion. Higher land cover percentages reduce erosion potential as raindrops do not directly destroy the topsoil.…”

“…Therefore, the combination of hydro-mulch and geo-jute is the most effective in reducing erosion due to rainfall. The use of geo-jute is increasingly effective in reducing erosion when applied to gentle slopes (Song et al, 2021). This indicates that using hydro-mulch and geo-jute together is more effective in reducing erosion compared to using them individually.…”

“…In the present study, it was detected that GC performed well under certain circumstances due to two-dimensional protections of contiguous wooden lumbers. GC re-duces the runoff velocity and consequently the soil loss, in other words, GC reinforces the modified slope by holding the soil in position against erosion (Sato, Kojma 2018;Arvin et al 2019;Song et al 2021). This structure allows more time for infiltration and sediment deposition in each cell.…”

“…Many studies have emphasised the importance of conservation practices against soil loss. For example, Song et al (2021) used geo-cell-containing wheat straws to control soil erosion and provide suitable conditions for vegetation growth. The results showed that soil erosion increased with increasing rainfall intensity and cell dimensions.…”
