The use of multiple methods in the Joint Irregular Warfare Analytic Baseline (JIWAB) study

Abstract: The Joint Irregular Warfare Analytic Baseline (JIWAB) study was a multi-year effort by the U.S. Marine Corps to demonstrate analytic methods better suited to irregular warfare than quantitative computer models and simulations. Multiple methods were used in combination to create and develop scenarios, understand conflict drivers and mitigators, and create potential U.S. responses. This article discusses the use of these methods, which included approaches such as general morphological analysis, wargaming, adapta… Show more

“…Papers illustrating or discussing some of the other relevant methods are included in the special issue of JDMS for which our paper was prepared. The other methods covered include agent-based modeling 59 ; fuzzy-logic modeling 50 ; mixed qualitative methods, such as narrative analysis, counterfactual analysis, system diagrams, and general morphological analysis (GMA) 60 ; cultural transmission 61 ; and social-network methods in nuclear proliferation analysis. 62 We noted earlier in the paper the importance of system dynamics methods, summarized in a textbook.…”

“…18 Proctor provides a general overview to modeling and simulation for counter-insurgency operations, 19 while a recent paper by Wong et al begin their modeling of counter-insurgency operations by including cultural issues. 20 For general missions, the military has also striven to apply modeling and simulation to the more difficult problems of social science. 21 Interestingly, cultural issues have been recently explored as a key element in modeling transmission of ideas on the dark web.…”
