The use of multiple tools for teaching medical biochemistry

Abstract: In this work, we describe the use of several strategies employing the philosophies of active learning and problem-based learning (PBL) that may be used to improve the teaching of metabolic biochemistry to medical and nutritional undergraduate students. The main activities are as follows: 1) a seminar/poster system in a mini-congress format (using topics of applied biochemistry); 2) a true/false applied biochemistry exam (written by peer tutors); 3) a 9-h exam on metabolism (based in real publications); 4) the … Show more

“…The authors' recent observation that transduction of allergen-specific TCR into peripheral blood T cells transfers allergen reactivity and fine specificity of the original clone [106,108] has also led to the development of an nTreg-based in vitro approach. For that purpose, we cotransduced FOXP3 into allergen-specific T cells to generate T cells with nTreg phenotypic and functional properties [230,231]. TCR/FOXP3-positive T cells displayed strong suppressive capacity in response to both allergen-specific as well as polyclonal TCR-dependent stimulation [109].…”

“…Students are encouraged to present their personal perspectives with PowerPoint Slides within 7 minutes, with around 12 speeches in each class. The audience of other students is welcomed to ask questions and minidiscussion may occur in the middle [11] [12]. Teachers serve as facilitator instead of guider in every aspect of discussion class including group assignment, topic choice, PowerPoint preparation, oral presentation, brainstorming discussion and decision on winner list.…”

“…9,13 Blogs have also been used as a component in educational, scientifi c and business pursuits. 11,14,15 Medical blogging is just one type of the 60 million entries in the blogosphere and has been struggling with issues such as ethics, accepting advertising dollars and the introduction of organisational blogs (eg American College of Emergency Physicians). 16 Manhattan Research Group estimated that there are 300,000 physicians who reviewed blogs in 2007 and 40,000 of them are bloggers (ie they own the blog).…”
