The Use of NUDIST, a Computerized Analytical Tool, to Support Qualitative Information Systems Research

Abstract: Discusses the use of software tools to support qualitative information systems research, and provides a practical example of how one tool, NUDIST, was used in a recent empirical study. Argues that greatest benefit can be gained from software tools when their use is based on sound theory of qualitative research. The analysis for the study was built on the concept of grounded theory, which was developed in 1967 and extended in 1984. Describes the processes involved in the particular research, and the way NUDIST … Show more

“…Rouse and Dick (1994) explained that computerized software tools such as NUD*IST are especially useful in the “decontextualizing and recontextualizing of data” (p. 56). In the iterative data coding process, decontextualizing involves data reduction from its original format into smaller individual units of meaning.…”

“…The two main advantages of using programs such as NVivo are the ability to complete the iterative pattern coding process much more quickly than with hand coding and the ability to test alternate coding patterns more easily. As Rouse and Dick (1994) explained, “With NUDIST, the initial coding is still time‐consuming, but once it has been done, the retrieval and combining of information is far easier than manual methods and far more flexible” (p. 59). NVivo also allows the researcher to create meaningful links between derived category codes, such as linking all data units from a particular interview.…”

“…The software package Nvivo was used to facilitate the analysis through the management of the extensive qualitative data (Rouse & Dick, 1994). Whilst the Nvivo package provided a strong data management tool, the identification and construction of themes remained a largely intuitive process based on the researchers' interpretation and understanding of the rich, qualitative data.…”

“…This opinion was seconded by Romano et al (2003, p. 216): "Many [CATA] tools are excellent for specific research functions in the social sciences, case studies, and ethnographies; however, they are not designed to deal with analysis of Internet-based Q[ualitative] D[ata] for business purposes." CATA tools are also subject to biases embedded in design, and some have poor interface and efficiency (Rouse and Dick 1994;Weitzman 1999;Zuell and Landmann 2004). The lack of convenience and efficiency is due to an enormously wide range of possible content-analysis applications, which makes it impractical to create a program that can support all conceivable operations for all types of content analysis.…”
