Compressive strength of mortars decreases quasi linearly with substitution rate. Fraction 0/0.63 mm of FRCA has a worse effect on mechanical properties of mortars. a r t i c l e i n f o b s t r a c tFine recycled concrete aggregates (FRCA) also called recycled sand, having particle sizes smaller than 5 mm, are essentially composed of mortar and hardened cement paste. Therefore they induce a large water demand which makes them hard to recycle into mortar and concrete. In this paper, the properties of mortars containing FRCA have been studied, including fresh properties, mechanical properties and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) microstructure.The influence of saturation state of FRCA (dried or saturated) on the properties of mortars of identical compositions has first been studied. The results showed that the slump of mortars containing dried FRCA is always larger than that of mortars containing saturated FRCA. Indeed, in the case of dried FRCA, the theoretical amount of absorbed water is added at the beginning of mixing leading to a temporary increase of the initial efficient W/C ratio and volume of paste, leading to a better workability before its absorption into FRCA. On the contrary, the absorbed water in saturated FRCA is not readily available and thus cannot contribute to increase the initial efficient W/C ratio. Moreover, the compressive strength of mortars containing dried FRCA is always larger than that of mortars made with saturated FRCA, which is attributed to a thinner interfacial transition zone improving its mechanical properties. The influence of the fraction of recycled sand and of the granular class of recycled sand on the mechanical properties of mortars has then been studied with saturated FRCA. The compressive strength of mortars decreases quasi linearly as the replacement percentage of recycled sand increases. Moreover, it is shown that the finer fraction of recycled sand (0/0.63 mm) has the worse effect on the mechanical properties of mortars.

El número de obras de construcción, remodelación y demolición en las ciudades colombianas aumenta de manera constante como consecuencia del crecimiento y desarrollo socioeconómico de la población urbana. Sin embargo, estas prácticas generan grandes volúme-nes de residuos que en la actualidad se han convertido en un problema de contaminación ambiental en ciudades como Cali (Colombia). La búsqueda de soluciones integrales que permitan un adecuado manejo, gestión y aprovechamiento de los diferentes materiales que componen los residuos de la construcción y demolición (RC&D) era impensable hace algunas dé-cadas. No obstante, hoy día es un desafío apremiante para los diferentes sectores de la sociedad que deben encaminar esfuerzos para encontrar soluciones. En este sentido, este artículo de revisión presenta un aná-lisis sobre la situación actual alrededor de este tema en la ciudad mencionada y propone la generación de acciones de acuerdo con las oportunidades y retos necesarios para alcanzar una gestión total de los RC&D. El análisis de esta problemática podría ayudar a orientar futuras investigaciones sobre el tema, además de promover su prioridad en la agenda pública, generando así las condiciones necesarias para que la actividad del reciclaje de los RC&D se convierta en una posibilidad viable en las ciudades colombianas a partir de la experiencia obtenida. ResumenEl crecimiento constante de las actividades de construcción, remodelación y demolición en las ciudades genera grandes volúmenes de residuos de concreto demolido, que en la actualidad se han convertido en un problema grave de contaminación ambiental. Por otro lado, dada la necesidad global de incrementar la eficiencia en el consumo de materiales y de energía resulta oportuno estudiar materiales para su reciclaje, sobre todo como en el caso del concreto, que hoy por hoy, es el más producido por año en el mundo y uno de los que causa mayor impacto ambiental. En este sentido, este trabajo de investigación evalúa el efecto de la sustitución parcial y total de los agregados naturales por agregados reciclados, obtenidos a partir de la trituración de residuos de la construcción y demolición sobre el comportamiento en estado fresco y endurecido de un concreto autocompactante. Los resultados mostraron que la incorporación de estos agregados reciclados no afecta significativamente el comportamiento en estado fresco de las mezclas, pero en cambio sí tiene influencia sobre el comportamiento en estado endurecido de los concretos, pues causa una disminución de la resistencia a la compresión de entre el 15% y el 29 %, además de un leve aumento de la cantidad de poros permeables en función de la cantidad de agregado natural que fue sustituido por reciclado (25, 50, 75 y 100 %).Palabras clave: Residuos de la construcción y demolición; agregados reciclados, agregados naturales; concreto de cemento portland; concreto autocompactante. AbstractThe steady growth of remodeling, demolition, and in general the construction activity in the populous cities generate large volumes of waste from demolished concrete, which now have become a serious problem of environmental pollution. Furthermore, given the global need to increase efficiency in the consumption of materials and energy, it is imperative to study the recycling of the materials, especially as in the case of concrete, which today, is the material most produced per year in the world, and one of the greatest contributors to a negative impact on the environment. In this sense, this research evaluates the effect of partial and total replacement of natural aggregates by recycled aggregates obtained from the crushing of construction waste and demolition on the behavior in fresh and hardened state of a self-compacting concrete. The results showed that the incorporation of these recycled aggregates did not significantly affect Fresh and hardened behavior of a self compacting concrete added with coal slag and made with coarse aggregate from recycled concrete.
