The use of the United States FDA programs as a strategy to advance the development of drug products for neglected tropical diseases

Abstract: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are infections which are endemic in poor populations in lower- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Approximately one billion people have now or are at risk of getting an NTD and yet less than 5% of research dollars are focused on providing treatments and prevention of these highly debilitating and deadly conditions. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Orphan Drug Designation program (ODDP) provides orphan status to drugs and biologics, defined as those intend… Show more

“…While the definition of NTDs varies, this category generally includes diseases that impact marginalized populations or lack effective treatment or vaccine. Sometimes, the products that are available to treat a NTD, such as the NTD schistosomiasis, are not easily accessible to the affected populations . Schistosomiasis, caused by trematode flatworms of the genus Schistosoma , is one of the most significant NTDs in the world.…”

“…Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of biologically unrelated tropical diseases that disproportionally affect low-income populations in developing regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. [1] While the definition of NTDs varies, this category generally includes diseases that impact marginalized populations or lack effective treatment or vaccine. Sometimes, the products that are available to treat a NTD, such as the NTD schistosomiasis, are not easily accessible to the affected populations.…”

“…time during which the originator can market the drug without competition from generic drug manufacturers) by the number of months that the review period is shortened. The effectiveness of this approach and the rules under which a PRV is awarded have been examined critically (Sonderholm, 2009, Robertson et al., 2012, Sachs-Barrable et al., 2014, Kesselheim et al., 2015). The ’case’ of miltefosine for treatment of visceral leishmaniasis has pointed attention to the fact that a PRV can be awarded to an organisation which has not itself invested significant funds in the development and for a drug which has already been registered in another country for the neglected disease indication.…”
