The value of sub-national data: The dynamics of contentious politics in Nepal

Abstract: Over the last decade, a renewed interest in the empirical analysis of contentious politics has led to significant improvements in the quality and quantity of data. The related wave of research has thus turned to analysis of the dynamics of contentious politics from a comparative perspective. Unfortunately, these studies use country level datasets for their analysis, creating a mismatch between the original actor-based theoretical framework and the empirical conceptualization of contentious collective action. Existing research shows that demonstrations, strikes, protest marches, and sit-ins are more common in civil war than often assumed.…”

“…To conceptualize this variation, I develop a conceptual typology of wartime civilian protest demands 3 . Focusing on stated demands provides a relevant classification basis because it goes to the heart of what protesters (claim they) want (González and Vüllers 2020, 310; White et al 2015, 473). Both conflict resolution (Wallensteen 2015) and civil resistance scholars (Chenoweth and Stephan 2011; Nepstad 2015) stress the importance of demands for understanding contentious politics and resolving conflict.…”
