The vapour phase detection of explosive markers and derivatives using two fluorescent metal–organic frameworks

Abstract: Two fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Zn(dcbpy)(DMF)]·DMF and [Dy(dcbpy)(DMF) 2 (NO 3 )] (dcbpy = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylate) were synthesised solvothermally and structurally characterised. Uniform shape and sized microcrystals of [Zn(dcbpy)(DMF)]·DMF were also produced using microwave synthesis. The frameworks give organic linkerbased fluorescence emission and demonstrate very different detection capabilities towards the explosive taggant 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane (DMNB) and trinitroto… Show more

“…The detection and quantification of low amounts of explosives is a concern for homeland security and environmental pollution. The nitroaromatics, including 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), picric acid/2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), and 2,6-dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT), are used as explosives [21,22].…”

“…Fluorescent polymers in combination with receptors such as crown ether, terpyridine, bi‐imidazole, and bipyridine have been demonstrated to show several advantages for sensing applications compared to small molecules . Nitrogen‐based ligands such as 2,2′‐bipyridine and other multidentate ligands have been used extensively as metal‐chelating ligands because of their effective coordination with a variety of metal ions . The emission intensity of fluorescent conjugated polymers dramatically decreases as a turn‐off sensor under photon irradiation if the exciton can rapidly migrate along the polymer backbone to the 2,2′‐bipyridine site.…”

“…Parkin's recent work reiterated the key importance of MOF porosity in sensing applications and highlighted the value of uniform microcrystals to sensitivity in explosives detection. 247 They proposed that the flatter and more uniform crystals gave greater access to the material on the sensing substrate, and thus improved response. In addition, Qiu et al used a self-sacrificing template to synthesize MOF nanotubes.…”
