The Vectron

Abstract: The Vectron is a new pulse-coherent Doppler sonar system that has been developed to allow remote measurement of turbulent velocities at mid-water depth (O 10 m distant from the instrument transducers) to meet the measurement and monitoring needs of the in-stream tidal generating industry. Multiple sonar units (based on the Nortek AD2CP hardware platform) are networked together and the instrument is configured with a modular philosophy that allows a great deal of flexibility in acoustic sampling schemes. “…Control of the timing of the emission itself enables alternative modes of operation, namely mono-static and bi-static geometrically-converging multi-beam systems. This feature has been exploited in the recent development of field-scale Converging Acoustic Doppler Profiler (C-ADP) systems [24,25].…”

“…The current research targets improved flow measurement resolution using remote measurement technology based on a Earlier developments of the C-ADP concept have been presented by Sellar et al [22] and Hay et al [23]. Sellar et al [22] validated a C-ADP installed on the nacelle of an operational tidal turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), Orkney, UK by comparison to a proximal conventional ADCP and a vertical acoustic Doppler profiler.…”

“…Measuring turbulence at TEC relevant locations: Initial development of a convergent beam ADP has been presented in [38] and [39] with this work aiming to overcome the limitations of acoustic current profilers in quantifying turbulence, including the assumption of flow homogeneity between D-ADP beams. While valid for larger eddies, coherent turbulent structures smaller than beam separation cannot be resolved, an inaccuracy which increases away from the instrument due to beam divergence.…”
