The Wave Glider: enabling a new approach to persistent ocean observation and research

Abstract: The Wave Glider TM wave-powered unmanned maritime vehicle represents a novel and unique approach to persistent ocean presence. Wave Glider is a hybrid seasurface and underwater vehicle in that it is comprised of a submerged "glider" attached via a tether to a surface float. The Wave Glider vehicle is propelled by the purely mechanical conversion of ocean wave energy into forward thrust, independent of wave direction. In this paper, we provide an overview of the design of this new platform and present results f… Show more

“…However, there are still substantial questions about the relatively thin, stably stratified upper ocean boundary layer, mostly due to a lack of necessary observations. New instrument platforms and techniques provide novel ways to observe and investigate the upper ocean, and more specifically the relatively shallow stable layers (Daniel et al, 2011;Peterson and Fer, 2014). This dissertation explores those layers.…”

“…In addition to the central mooring and to obtain better spatial coverage of the SPURS-I study area, Liquid Robotics Wave Gliders (Daniel et al, 2011) were deployed during the field campaign, and remained in the water for a year-long mission (other than a few days during the midterm cruise for servicing). Three Wave Gliders moved around a 1 ∘ x 1 ∘ box near the central mooring in repeating paths to provide good temporal and spatial coverage.…”

“…AUV mission duration is usually constrained by their endurance. Glider-type AUVs overcome this problem by using passive propulsion systems, significantly increasing mission ranges and lifetimes [66][67][68][69][70].…”

“…As this vehicle was designed specifically to collect data from the ocean, the vehicle is capable of accommodating various kinds of sensors which may be used for different applications during missions [1]. The vehicle transmits data to land in real-time sequence, allowing for accurate and easy monitoring of the vehicle's trip and the data collected [2].…”
