The weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) of the Maritime Provinces of Canada, II: New records from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and regional zoogeography

Abstract: Seventy-nine species of weevils are newly reported in Nova Scotia and 66 species are newly reported on Prince Edward Island, increasing the known provincial weevil faunas to 244 and 92 species, respectively. Thirty-six species are recorded for the first time in the Maritime Provinces; of these, Ceutorhynchus pallidactylus (Marsham), Listronotus dietzi O'Brien, Corthylus columbianus Hopkins, and Orchidophilus aterrimus (Waterhouse) are recorded for the first time in Canada. “…Both studies thus contribute to ongoing programs to document the distribution, abundance, origins, and trophic categories of the beetle fauna of the province which are essential for many ecological, zoogeographic, and environmental monitoring studies (McCorquodale et al 2005). Some specimens derived from this study have already contributed to recent surveys of the Coleoptera fauna of the region (Bousquet and Laplante 2006;Majka , 2006bMajka , 2007aMajka , 2007cMajka , 2008aCline 2006a, 2006b;Majka and Johnson 2008;Majka and Pollock 2006;Majka et al , 2007aMajka et al , 2007a). …”

“…With the exception of blueberries, all of the crops and trees in the immediate vicinity of the find have been previously recorded as food plants for adult P. sericeus in North America or Europe (Majka et al 2007;Coyle et al 2008). Neither the hazelnut orchard nor the birch stand in the United States could be accessed.…”
