The XBI BioLab for life science experiments at the European XFEL

Abstract: The science of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) critically depends on the performance of the X-ray laser and on the quality of the samples placed into the X-ray beam. The stability of biological samples is limited and key biomolecular transformations occur on short timescales. Experiments in biology require a support laboratory in the immediate vicinity of the beamlines. The XBI BioLab of the European XFEL (XBI denotes XFEL Biology Infrastructure) is an integrated user facility connected to the beamlines for… Show more

“…Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) of the NPs was also recorded using the TEM. TEM experiments were conducted in the XBI Biolab of European XFEL (Han et al 2021 ). Average Ag core diameter, size distributions were calculated for each sample by averaging ~ 260 NPs from the TEM images using ImageJ software.…”

“…Platelet-shaped crystals of BlaC with approximate dimensions of 10 Â 10 Â 2 mm (Appendix A) were produced by a stirring method on site in the XBI facility of the EuXFEL (Han et al, 2021) using ammonium phosphate (AP) as described by Olmos et al (2018). The crystals belonged to space group P2 1 (Table 1), with four BlaC subunits in the asymmetric unit [Fig.…”
