The yields of diacetoxyscirpenol produced byFusarium sambucinum cultures isolated from potato tubers and their toxicity to brine shrimps (Artemia salina)

Abstract: The amount of diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS) produced by 14 isolates ofFusarium sambucinum under laboratory conditions has been examined. The isolates were obtained from potato tubers with dry rot symptoms. Yields of DAS ranged from 20 to 330 mg/kg of wheat grain culture (chemical analysis -TLC). Chemical analysis and biological tests showed very similar results.

This ability, together with the fact that the trichothecene concentrations showing an antifeedant activity may be found in agricultural commodities colonized by F. sambucinum (Perkowski et al, 1989), supports the hypothesis that toxic fungal secondary metabolites are produced as a means of protecting food resources and/or avoiding predation (Janzen, 1977;Wicklow, 1984).
